Description:

The project involved the refurbishment of a cast-iron Victorian glasshouse which had fallen into considerable disrepair. The structural frame was carefully dismantled and stripped down, repaired and then re-assembled offsite to ensure its integrity. Replacement components where necessary were specially cast to match originals. Tight control of the application of 7 coats of paint to the cast iron elements was required, and also of the application of the mastic sealant to the glazing. The original brickwork was carefully restored. An electrical installation with new external granite paving and walls, converted the glasshouse into an elegant function room for the Embassy. The location of the works adjacent to an occupied private house with very limited access necessitated strict co-ordination of material deliveries and of construction operations. The overall careful attention to detail from beginning to end is reflected in the finished product - a little jewel of a building.
