Tánaiste marks handover of new €9.5m Further Education Campus in Blackrock

June 17, 2014

The stunning new €9.5m state-of-the-art Blackrock Further Education Institute building, designed by Valerie Mulvin of McCullough Mulvin Architects, is a project that blends traditional heritage with modern design and a complex high tech specification. The three existing protected structures from the 1860s -1900s which have been sensitively preserved and integrated combined are one of the largest dedicated Further Education Institutes in the Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Education and Training Board (known as the Carnegie Library, The Blackrock Technical Institute and the Municipal Technical Institute). The new development involved the reorder, reorganisation and upgrade to include senior institute facilities and a new library facility. The new structure is approximately 4,347m2 with 250m2 of atrium and garden space. The existing protected structures required generous design and construction provisions to become highly permeable to digital media to support the wide spectrum of teaching and learning methods facilitated there whilst losing none their heritage or character.  Catering for over 1,000 full and part time students, it will serve the skills development and education needs of the local community. Modern new facilities include computer laboratories, design studios, and beauty salons and an ICT learning centre which will benefit school leavers and adults returning to education.  The campus also includes a social area for students and a modern cafeteria. Construction began on July 2012 and completed in May 2014.   Left to Right: Architect Valerie Mulvin, McCullogh Mulvin Architecture, Alan Brunton Director Collen Construction Ltd, Deirdre Hanamy, College Principal Blackrock Further Education Institute, An Tánaiste, Eamon Gilmore, T.D., Minister for Foreign Affairs;  According to Deirdre Hanamy, Principal, “This new building will bring a welcome and significant upgrading of facilities for staff and students and it will enhance and strengthen our ability to achieve our mission which is to provide a quality teaching and learning experience for students.
